Lipscomb at Vermont 12/20/19

Vermont 86 Lipscomb 63

Vermont's offense exploded as they dominated Lipscomb to get back into the win column before going on holiday break. This was a great "get right" game for the Cats as they got contributions from everyone in a true team win. Stef Smith bounced back to lead Vermont with 20 points. Lamb fought through foul trouble and finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks. The real story of the game was Robin Duncan and Bailey Patella. Robin Duncan did his best Brian Voelkel impression finishing with 2 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and a strong defensive effort. Robin's incredible passing was on display all game as he was in complete control of the offense. The Voelkel comparison is an apt one as he is able to make a huge impact without giving anything on the offensive end. Patella also played the best game of his career, flying all over the court with his usual hustle and elite athleticism. He finished with 7 points and 9 rebounds and was a disruptive force on the defensive end. It is his speed that really stands out as he consistently beats everyone to lose balls. Both Robin and Patella are potentially going to be looked to for more minutes as the only negative from last night is that Ben Shungu re-injured his hamstring. You got to feel for Shungu as he looked very discouraged on the sidelines after the injury. He was playing another great game before the injury and at this point is the most crucial player on Vermont besides Lamb. The toughness and leadership he brings is just incredible and if he is out for another extended period of time the other guys are really going to have to step up. With the offense finally clicking again it is worth mentioning that some of the offensive difficulty is that Vermont has played a very tough schedule. The teams they have played have been mostly strong defensive teams. I love the Kenpom rankings as the offensive and defensive efficiency numbers are very telling when it comes to assessing opponents. For what it is worth the Cats opponents thus far would combine to be the 50th most efficient defense in the country. Their offense hasn't had a lot of room to work and as a result the struggles at that end have been magnified. This stretch of games is against a slightly lower tier of opponent than the Cats have play thus far. It will be a good barometer to see how the offense performs against a different type of opponent. Happy Holidays everyone!!!

P.S. Anthony Lamb is now 25 points away from passing former teammate Trae Bell-Haynes for 8th on the all time scoring list.

UNCG at Vermont 12/18/19

UNCG 54 Vermont 53

Vermont came up short in a great college basketball game against UNC Greensboro. The game lived up to its billing as two of the best mid-major programs in the country went toe to toe. Both teams were fighting tooth and nail and the lead never went above 6 points for either side. Both defenses were locked in and executed their game plan. UNCG was able to make the plays down the stretch in a game that could have gone either way, That was on of those games that it is a shame that someone had to lose because both teams played so hard. Anthony Lamb had his way in the paint and led the Cats with 23 points and 7 rebounds. He was fast and decisive underneath the hoop and just abused the single coverage with an array of moves. Unfortunately he is still struggling mightily from the perimeter and could not get a shot to fall down the stretch. Ben Shungu turned in another stellar performance, playing incredible defense on the preseason conference player of the year Isaiah Miller and holding him to 11 points. The Vermont defense is elite and continues to put the Cats in a position to win. Unfortunately the perimeter shooting continues to be an area of difficulty and in the second half completely disappeared for the Cats. A lot of that had to do with UNCG playing incredible defense. I can see why they are one of the elite defenses in the country and I actually thought that was the best defensive team the Cats have faced (and that includes Virginia). The fact that UNCG presses for the entire game really wears the opponent down. There are a lot of positives to take away from this game. Vermont played well in every aspect of the game except their perimeter shooting. They continue to show that they can play with anyone in the country and as long as they stay engaged on the defensive end, the ball will start to bounce their way. UNCG has had some tough luck this season, losing two games on halfcourt buzzer beaters, so they were due for one not to fall. Now Vermont has a quick turnaround before facing Lipscomb on Friday. They can build off this game and gear up to get back into the win column.

Towson at Vermont 12/7/19

Vermont 55 Towson 38

Back in the friendly confines of Patrick Gym, Vermont used a smothering defensive effort to get back into the win column. The Cats’ defense in this one was very impressive. They were all over the court, hustling and making everything difficult for Towson. In the second half Vermont held Towson without a hoop for 11 minutes. The Cats challenged everything at the rim and took control of the game with their physicality. That type of defensive effort will continue to win them games while their offense comes around. Everyone that stepped on the court for Vermont gave everything they had and won all of the 50/50 balls. That type of mental focus in exactly what this team needed to bring to the court to begin this homestand. It was no coincidence that Ben Shungu’s return sparked a strong defensive effort. He is an absolute warrior. He finished with 5 points, 7 rebounds, and a whole lot of heart. So physical and relentless. It was very clear tonight how much the Cats have missed his presence on the court. He is an elite defender and his ability to get to the rim really opens things up for the rest of the offense. Stef Smith benefited from having another playmaker on the court. He was electric in this one, leading the team with 23 points on 7/11 from the field including 5/8 from three. Despite all of the shooting woes for Vermont, Smith is actually shooting the highest three point percentage of his career at 42%. Anthony Lamb is really struggling offensively but never quits and still manages to push the Cats to victory. Despite another 4-19 shooting night Lamb finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds. He also played tough underneath including an electrifying blocked dunk. Daniel Giddens played really well in extended minutes due to Ryan Davis sitting out. He looks more comfortable on the court and is playing far more under control. Although Aaron Deloney continues to struggle to make shots, his tenacity and hustle are impressive. He never gives up on the play and impacted the game with his hustle plays tonight. Now the Cats get some much needed and well deserved rest. They don't play again until December 18th against UNC Greensboro. That will be a very tough game against a strong team with a pre-season conference player of the year in Isaiah Miller. This win was really important so the Cats can begin to build some momentum as they inch closer to conference play.

Vermont at Cincinnati 12/3/19

Cincinnati 82 Vermont 73

Vermont's comeback bid fell short in a hard fought game with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Vermont got down by 20 points early in the second half but chipped away and pulled within 7 late in the game. Cincinnati played a nearly perfect game knocking down 12/19 from three and 22/26 from the free throw line. Considering that the Bearcats played out of their minds,Vermont hung tough. There were some defensive lapses but for the most part Cincinnati just didn't miss. The fact that the Cats were able to remain in the game and fight back says a lot about the character of this team. With how the last few games have gone, it would have been easy to mail it in and get back home. Vermont never gave up and really dug deep during their second half run. Anthony Lamb recommitted to being an inside presence despite the fact that the Bearcats were running several defenders at him every time he touched the ball. As a result he had another tough shooting night but finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks. He was diving all over the floor and gave everything ounce of effort he had in his body. Stef Smith exploded out of slump late in the second half and finished with 18 points. He also played like a warrior battling through back spasms. Everett Duncan also played very will finishing with 13 points and 8 rebounds. It was really important for him to see a few shots go through the rim. As a whole the Cats knocked down 15/28 from three. Quite a turnaround from the past few games. Seven different players made threes as the stat correction came back all in one game. The shots had to start falling at some point for Vermont as they are not going to spend the whole season being one of the worst shooting teams in the country. There are a lot of positives to take away from this game. The Cats showed some life on offense and the team was more engaged in the game. Especially considering they were shorthanded, this was a much more complete game. Now they begin a long homestand where they will be home for the entire month of December. Perfect timing for a team that needs to get healthy and build some positive momentum. I am looking forward to seeing some games at Patrick.

Vermont at Yale 12/1/19

Yale 65 Vermont 52

Vermont struggled to find an offensive rhythm and dropped a tough road matchup with Yale. Yale was favored in this game so the loss itself is not surprising. Vermont has won three years in a row in some very tight battles and it was Yale's turn to execute. However the struggles of the Vermont offense are becoming a major concern. The offense just looks awful. Teams have figured out that the Cats struggle to make outside shots so they are collapsing into the paint and making driving to the rim very difficult. As a result the offense is choppy as the Cats players probe for driving lanes with little success and settle for outside jumpers. They need to really shake things up on offense in hopes that someone can get jump started. Stef Smith was completely ineffective today. He finished with zero points and turned the ball over 4 times. He is the key cog in the Vermont offense and his inconsistent play to start the season is a major reason for the teams struggles. Without him as a reliable secondary option, teams can focus all of their defensive attention on Anthony Lamb. Lamb is working hard to fight through the extra attention and willed himself to 18 points and 7 rebounds. However he is falling in love with the three pointer and it is greatly impacting his efficiency. His percentage has plummeted as his attempts have increased. He is shooting 2.5 more threes per game than last season but only making 23% of his attempts. The defense is focusing on stopping him from getting to the rim and Lamb is playing right into their hands by settling for jumpers. As a result he has been getting to the free throw line at a much lower rate. Drawing fouls and making free throws is a significant part of his game. He has to find a better balance between his perimeter game and his post game. His offensive imbalance is indicative of a trend for the Cats across the board. Over the first 4 games (all wins) Vermont averaged 24 attempts from three and 23 attempts from the free throw line per game. In the 5 games since, those numbers have changed to 30 attempts from three and 10 attempts from the free throw line per game. Getting to the free throw line is incredibly important and Vermont is making it easy for opponents to keep them off the free throw line by settling for long jumpers. The supporting cast is contributing positively in every other aspect of the game besides at the offensive end. They are hustling and playing tough defense but are just unable to make a consistent offensive impact. The road gets tougher as Ben Shungu's injury could keep him out for much longer and Daniel Giddens left today's game and did not return. He looked to be in a fair amount of pain. The Cats are going to have to band together and dig deep with Cincinnati on deck. That will be another tough game where they are going to have to show up and execute the game plan effectively.

Gallaudet at Vermont 11/27/19

College athletics are about more than basketball.

Every year people have very strong opinions about the practice of playing a lower division team. I understand the debate and I think the easiest answer is it is not always about the game itself. Sometimes it is about opportunity. I thought the game tonight hit all the right notes. What an incredible opportunity for Becker to come full circle and see how far his journey has taken him. What a great opportunity for Gallaudet to come play in a great college basketball atmosphere. They made enough shots for them to enjoy the game and they had a sizable fan contingent that was very enthusiastic. The group picture at the end of the game was a great representation of how college athletics can bring people together. It was a really nice moment before heading into the Thanksgiving holiday. Take time to appreciate all of the wonderful things you have in life and have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Vermont snags GW transfer Justin Mazzulla

Surprise recruiting news!!

Today Vermont added Justin Mazzulla, a 6-3 195lb guard transfer from George Washington. Mazulla has actually already played 4 games for George Washington this season, announcing his intent to transfer 4 days ago, making him a mid-season transfer. I am assuming that means he will redshirt this season and join the team after the semester break next year. That would give him a year and a half to see game action in the Vermont program. You have to complete an academic year in residence before you are eligible to play (unless you get a wavier). An academic year would be two complete semesters. That is my best guess as to his future eligibility. This is a great fit for Vermont. He started all 33 games for George Washington as a sophomore and was named a tri-captain. He actually had 10 points and 6 rebounds against Vermont when the two teams played last season. He averaged 8.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists last season. There was a coaching change in the off-season and after starting the first game of this season, his minutes vanished. The timing of the transfer is odd but former Catamount Maurice Joseph was his coach last season and I am sure that Becker and his staff got the low down on the situation. Mazulla is a big guard who can do a little bit of everything and stuff the stat sheet. He is not a great shooter, but a solid all around player. To be named captain as a sophomore he must be a high character player and a natural leader. He is also a strong student who was named to the A-10 all academic team. Another guy that to fits the mold of a player that experiences success in the Vermont program. He has a chance to be a very good player for Vermont. If I have his eligibility right, Mazulla would provide an important bridge in his senior year with Stef Smith and Ben Shungu graduating after next season. It is great to add another experienced player to the program for next season when the Cats lose so much game experience.

Vermont vs Rider 11/24/19

Rider 72 Vermont 67

Vermont collapsed in the second half and dropped their second game of the season. The Cats played the worst half of basketball I have seen them play in several years. Rider sped them up and made them play at their tempo. As a result the shot selection in the second half was atrocious. Vermont settled for long jumpers or threw up shots from odd angles and were completely out of rhythm. Anthony Lamb struggled mightily and couldn't get anything going. Lamb finished the game 4-19 from the field. That might be the worst I have ever seen him play. He was off balance and bothered by the defensive attention that Rider focused on him. With Lamb struggling mightily no one else was able to step up and fill the void. The poor perimeter shooting was going to lose them a game eventually and this was the game. Particularly outside of Stef Smith and Lamb the rest of the team shot 1-11 from three. The defense also struggled in the second half. In the first half the Cats switched to a zone defense which completely changed the game. I thought that Becker waited to long to go back to it when Rider was making a run in the second half. Rider couldn't miss and Vermont couldn't make and the Cats never recovered. It is so strange to see this team get rattled. They so rarely let the opposing team impose their will and make Vermont play their style. I was also surprised at how few turnovers they were able to force. Rider had really struggled with turnovers this season and Vermont was unable to capitalize. Rider was picked second in the MAAC in the preseason poll so this is a good team that will have success this season. But to play that poorly in a big game is very surprising for Vermont. During the run of success that Vermont has had they have displayed an unnatural ability to show up in just about every game. They just didn't have it in the second half. This will serve as a good wake up call for Vermont. The coaching staff will be able to push them to fix the mistakes a little harder now that they played that poorly. The big area of future concern for me is the perimeter shooting. Knocking down perimeter shots is one of the things that makes the Cats a very dangerous team. Without that, their offense tends to grind to a halt while they force the ball to Lamb. The lone bright spot was that Robin Duncan finally showed some life on offense. He made some tough shots around the rim and finished with 13 points. His shooting continues to be poor but with his size he should be able to finish over smaller defenders. Now Vermont has the sub D-1 game against Gallaudet before going on the road to Yale. Time to refocus and get back on track.

Vermont vs CCSU

Vermont 81 Central Connecticut State 49

Stef Smith was on fire as Vermont used a dominant second half to get the win over CCSU at Mohegan Sun. Smith finished 9-12 from the field and 5-8 from three to lead the team with 24 points. He also tied for the team lead with 6 rebounds for good measure. Anthony Lamb and Ryan Davis rounded out the Cats in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively. In the first half Vermont jumped out to a big lead early and then took their foot off the glass which allowed CCSU to hang around. I am sure the team got a talking to at halftime and responded with a monster second half. CCSU is one of the weakest teams in division one and Vermont took care of business. This sets up a very interesting match-up with Rider in tonight's game. After playing Virginia earlier in the week (the slowest paced team in the country) they now play one of the fastest paced teams in the country. Rider is also one of the best rebounding teams in the country. They get up and down the floor and are very good on the offensive glass. This will be an interesting challenge for the Cats as this is a style of team they do not often play. They are going to have to be very focused on the defensive end of the court. That is where this game will be won. It should be a exciting game of contrasting styles.

Vermont at Virginia 11/19/19

Virginia 61 Vermont 55

The Cats hung tough and battled Virginia thanks to a monster second half from Anthony Lamb. He just keeps getting better and better. Virginia is the best defensive team in the country. They have been the best defensive team since Tony Bennett became their coach. For Lamb to go out and score 25 second half points is nothing short of monumental. He was in the zone. Everything looks effortless when he is feeling it. It reminded me of the St. Bonaventure game last season. 30 points on a career high 7 three pointers. Virginia was giving up 36 points per game until tonight and Lamb almost got there by himself.  What a performance. Game in and game out, no matter the opponent, Lamb is the best player on the floor. Stef Smith also played a really tough game finishing with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Daniel Giddens pulled down 7 more rebounds and is finding his footing on the defensive end. Predictably against such a strong defensive team the rest of the Cats struggled to find a rhythm. The Vermont defense looked very strong again as they continue to make teams work for every basket. They really missed Ben Shungu in this game. Especially his physicality both on defense and slashing to the rim. This is a tough loss as they were once again so tantalizingly close. However with the way they played, it is another win for the program. They continue to play tough in these big games and do not look over-matched. They expect to win when they step on the court, no matter the opponent. What makes this game more impressive is that Vermont is able to play this well while definitely still finding themselves as a team. They can and will continue to get better. These are the games that as a fan of this program you just sit back and appreciate how far this program has risen. Even the most optimistic of fans at the turn of the century couldn't have predicted that at some point Vermont would be able to consistently compete with the top teams in the country. What a game. What a team. This is going to be a fun season.

Lamb takes down St. John's

Vermont 70 St. John's 68

Anthony Lamb from the elbow!!

Vermont finally got the big non-conference win they have been searching for thanks to a HUGE second half from Anthony Lamb. He was the best player on the floor and it wasn't even close. Scoring from everywhere, fighting through contact, ripping down big rebounds. The St. John's coach challenged his team to stop Lamb and they couldn't even slow him down. 23 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists. Who else was going to take the shot? Once he got to the elbow, you just knew it was going in. He had some incredible finishes around the rim and his awareness under the hoop is on another level. What an incredible performance by an incredible player. Everett Duncan and Stef Smith also stepped up big time. Everett attacked the rim late in the second half and had some nifty finishes around the rim. In a team high 37 minutes he chipped in 17 points and zero turnovers. He has made himself a threat from more than just the three point line. Smith also scored 17 points and finally looked comfortable in the offense. A big time performance from the veterans. Daniel Giddens played a season high 23 minutes, and it wasn't always pretty, but he pulled down 9 rebounds and looked more comfortable in the defensive rotations. Ryan Davis continued his strong start and has been the most consistent perimeter shooter so far this season. Bailey Patella made some big hustle plays during his 8 minutes and hit a big three. He has been a very effective spark off the bench. His athleticism is really showing through. The Vermont defense is playing at such a high level right now. St. John's stayed in the game from the free throw line as the Cats defense was making everything difficult from the field. This is the win that this group wanted. They knew they could compete and they went out and took control of the game in the second half. What continues to be impressive in these big games is that the Cats are competing with the major schools without gimmicks or playing out of their minds. They are competing and have now won the big game without needing to play a perfect game. That says so much about the Vermont program and the character of the players. When they step on the court, they expect to win. Now they are playing with house money. The pressure of winning a big road game against a major conference team is off and they can go out and grind with Virginia. That game will be a fascinating battle between two of the best defensive teams in the country.

Boston University at Vermont 11/13/19

Vermont 62 BU 47

Vermont used another strong defensive effort to win their home opener against BU. The length, athleticism, and depth of this team is wearing opponents down to open the season. So many players can guard multiple positions. It makes it hard for other teams to find and exploit matchups. That matchup against Virginia next week could be a first to 40 type game. Anthony Lamb was a beast in this one. Bloodied from contact in the first half, he battled underneath and finished with a monster 15 point, 16 rebound double double. He really dictated the game with his physicality and is looking closer and closer to full strength after missing time due to injury. Robin Duncan and Aaron Deloney also reached double figures with 10 each. Both players attacked the basket and Deloney hit a big three at the halftime buzzer. Without Ben Shungu, Deloney played 23 minutes and despite a few ill advised turnovers provided a nice spark. The offense is still a work in progress as the players get used to their roles and they begin to build chemistry. The 3-0 start is great and they are going to be able to rely on their defense to win a lot of games this year. The offense will need to be firing on all cylinders over the next two games against St. Johns and Virginia. In those two games they will need to find a way to knock down a few more perimeter shots. I am very excited for the St. Johns matchup as that is one of those winnable high major games that Vermont has had opportunities at over the last few years.

The other big news of the week is that Isaiah Powell will be redshirting this season due to a lack of playing time. This is a very intriguing situation. If Powell is on board this is a great move by the coaching staff. Someone was going to miss out on minutes this season with such a deep team. Powell could use a redshirt year to improve his shooting and ball handling and step right into a major role next season. It is something that teams should do more often. Vermont has a great track record of successful redshirts. Everett Duncan redshirted his sophomore year and it allowed him to make a tremendous impact during the following season. All Powell has to do is talk to Everett, Ben Shungu, or Ernie Duncan and all of them will tell him that the redshirt year can be very beneficial. Ra Kpedi's development was hurt by the lack of a redshirt year it ultimately led to his transfer. Powell can absolutely maximize his talent by taking this year to refine the flaws in his game. A strong move by the Vermont program to maximize their talent for this season and seasons to come.

Vermont at Bucknell 11/10/19

Vermont 66 Bucknell 63

Everett Duncan sank four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory on the road at Bucknell. It was another ugly game on both sides featuring a combined 43 fouls and an eerily similar combined 7/47 (15%) from three. Through two games the new three point line is clearly having an effect. The defense is definitely being stretched which is opening up driving lanes. However, players are taking shots from VERY deep. I don't have any actual statistics to back up the average shot distance but players on the perimeter are taking shots that are several feet behind the new three point line. I read an article that across college basketball so far the percentage is around 31% from three which is about three percentage points lower than past seasons. However attempts are actually up. It is going to be very interesting how this plays out as players and teams adjust to the new distance. Anthony Lamb powered through foul trouble scoring 20 points in only 18 minutes. He worked for every point as Bucknell ran several bodies at Lamb every time he touched the ball. Ryan Davis continues to impress and finished with his first career double double (16 points, 10 rebounds). He has really been a revelation so far this season and gives the Cats quite a 1-2 punch underneath. Ben Shungu played an uneven game but finished with a team high 34 minutes. He shot 4-13 from the field and really struggled to finish around the rim. He did pull down 7 rebounds to go with his 10 points and played very tough perimeter defense. Duncan Demuth stepped up big time playing 23 minutes. He didn't do anything spectacular but played tough defense and made a few hustle plays. He was thrust into a bigger roll as Daniel Giddens battled ineffectiveness. Giddens only played 11 minutes and had a couple nice blocks but was lost on several other defensive rotations. Stef Smith's struggles continued as he finished 1-9 from the field. His shot selection had been particularly poor through the first two games. He seems to be struggling the most with his new role after Ernie Duncan's graduation. Despite the struggles this is another huge win. Bucknell had the Cats number the past two seasons and it was nice to get them back. The Bison are picked to finish second in the Patriot league this season so this is a big win against another strong mid-major program. Now time for another Patriot league opponent in the home opener against Boston University on Wednesday night. Patrick will be rocking!

Vermont at St. Bonaventure 11/8/19

Vermont 61 St. Bonaventure 59

The first game of the season is in the books and the Cats used a strong defense to pull out the victory versus St. Bonaventure on the road. This three year series produced some tremendous games with the Bonnies winning on a buzzer beater two years ago, Vermont striking back with the thrilling double overtime victory last year and this year's back and forth affair. Coach Becker said in a radio interview this week that with adding the new guys (and missed practice time for a few starters) he expected the early part of the season to be choppy and that the Cats would have to rely on their defense. That proved to be very prophetic as Vermont struggled to find any kind of rhythm on the offensive end. This game was ugly on both sides with the teams combining to shoot 7/47 (15%) from three. Anthony Lamb showed some rust shooting 3-12 from the field and 0-7 from three. He gutted it out, got to the line, and finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. After torching the Bonnies the last two years it was clearly their game plan to make his night difficult. Everett Duncan stepped up and chipped in 14 points of his own. Duncan was very aggressive slashing to the rim which allowed him to get to the line as well. I was very impressed with Ben Shungu coming off his injury. He slid right back into the starting lineup and made some clutch plays. He did a little bit of everything and hit a big three in the second half. The rust was there as he committed a team high 5 turnovers but he finihsed with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Ryan Davis provided a nice spark off the bench finishing with 8 points and 6 rebounds. His footwork is very impressive and he really battled on the boards at the end of the game. This was really a team victory with each player that saw the floor making important plays. The only major concern was that Stef Smith didn't seem right. He really struggled finishing 2-10 form the field with 4 turnovers. He looked like he was laboring and didn't have his normal explosiveness. Getting a road win against an A-10 team to open the season is huge. No matter what it is tough to win games on the road, especially when you don't have your best stuff. It is going to be a quick turnaround for tomorrow's game at Bucknell and it will be interesting to see what adjustments Vermont makes.

19-20 Season Preview

After an offseason of unending hype, it is time for the season to begin. This year's Cats have the highest ceiling of any Vermont team in history. Period. They have the star power, depth, athleticism, and leadership to go toe to toe with any team on their schedule.

Here are three keys to this season:

Three point shooting

The Cats most significant loss from last season was the graduation of Ernie Duncan. He is one of the best three point shooters in Vermont history and his consistency will not be easy to replace. Add in the extra layer of the three point line being moved further out and there is going to be an adjustment period. Vermont has many capable three point shooters but consistency can be a problem. Anthony Lamb and Stef Smith tend to run in streaks and they will certainly bear some of the load. The key will be Everett Duncan. Does he regain the form he displayed during his sophomore year when he set the record for single season three point percentage? That is the big question. He had an up and down season a year ago and will need to rediscover his stroke if the Cats are going to rise to the level they are shooting for. Early returns are good as he has been lights out during the preseason. Ryan Davis will also be a key contributor from beyond the arc as he too has shown improvement.

Battle for minutes

With such a deep and talented team there are going to be some intense playing time battles. It is a good problem to have but this season there are going to be some very good players on Vermont's roster that are relegated to the bench. Becker and his coaching staff do as good a job as any in managing playing time but it can be a difficult process. The Vermont staff have built a winning culture where everyone is ready to contribute and makes the most out of the role that they are given. It will be interesting to see if they can continue to manage that as players minutes may vary widely from game to game. Keeping the players focused on the larger goal while getting them ready when their number is called will be a challenge for the coaching staff.

Staying sharp

This years team wants to win a game in the NCAA tournament. That is the goal. As a result the team wants to peak at the right time and be playing their best basketball in March. The bottom half of the America East is again going to be on the weaker end of the spectrum and as a result there are going to be a lot of lopsided conference games. This team is mentally tough and will be able to excel no matter the opponent. The more concerning piece is just the game reps against tough opponents. When you are in a pattern of dominating games night in and night out it can be tough to stay sharp. This is nothing new for this crew as they have been meeting this challenge for several years now. The gap just might be even a little wider this year as the profile of the Vermont program continues to rise.

Final prediction: 26-5 (14-2) America East Champs

This team should once again raise a banner. They are well rounded and have great leadership. They have a bona fide star in Anthony Lamb who is poised to have another tremendous season and cement his Vermont legend status. I would like to predict a NCAA tourney win as this team is more than capable of pulling a big upset. The problem is that winning a tourney game is so match-up dependent. The last two Vermont tourney teams were very much capable of upsets as well. They unfortunately got the most difficult match-ups possible when the bracket was released. So much has to fall right for a team to be in position for an upset. More than anything as fans this is a season to enjoy, appreciate, and savor. Lamb is a once in a generation player. His leadership and dedication on and off the court is the best I have ever seen. He is joy to watch and I am going to appreciate every last game. It is going to be a fun ride and I can't wait to get it started.

Honoring Legends

First and foremost tonight was special. Sorrentine & Coppenrath are the reason I am a Vermont fan. That era was incredible and every game was a chance to see what they were going to do next. From that point on I haven't missed very many games. It is so special to have this incredible level of college basketball in our little old state and we have these two legends to thank for that. The ceremony was perfect and the crowd was incredible. Becker said after the game that it didn't have the atmosphere of a normal exhibition game and I would have to agree. That felt like a late season thriller. A wonderful night for two wonderful people.

As far as the game goes, holey moley. I try to keep a level head on this blog and keep an even keel when the hype train starts rolling. After watching that game tonight it is hard to keep that feeling in check. This team has a chance to be the best ever. At times tonight they were unstoppable. At no point during the game did they look like a team missing one of the best players in the country. The biggest reason to believe in this teams ability to take it to the next level is their mentality. These players are focused. They are not playing like a team that has bought into the hype. Diving for a loose ball, fighting through screens, making the extra pass. My favorite moment from the game was probably Stef Smith tipping the ball away and fighting for possession, the ball rolling straight down the edge of the sideline, Smith tracking it down, and whipping it to a hard charging Everett Duncan for a layup. That is a play from a team that only cares about winning. Smith looked incredible before getting a little dinged up. So fast, so confident. He is ready to step into the spotlight. Ryan Davis continued to impress. He is a completely different player. Healthy and slimmer, Davis is noticeably quicker and has the look of a player who could take over a game and carry his team. Everett made 6/8 from three and also looked focused and confident. Daniel Giddens had some impressive blocked shots and the coaching staff is committed to getting him looks at the rim. He isn't quite up to speed yet but the potential is tantalizing. In the first half Vermont ran a lot of high ball screen action and it was very effective at getting their post players good shots at the rim. That will be a nice wrinkle to the offense this season.  Bailey Patella also had the best extended minutes of his career. His athleticism is a difference maker. The hype is real and the ceiling of this team is very high. The battle for minutes is going to be intense as this is by far the deepest team Vermont has put together. I will be out of town for next weekend's exhibition so I will no be able to see that game. I will post my my season preview before the first regular season game. What a time to be a Vermont fan.

Scrimmage at the Aud

For the second year in a row the Vermont basketball teams made the trip down to the historic Barre Auditorium for an open scrimmage. The Aud is my favorite place to watch a basketball game so I am beyond delighted with this new tradition. The Cats played two 16 minute halves so the intensity was at a higher level than it was on Wednesday night. Ryan Davis continued to impress and looks like a completely different player. He looks trim and is moving noticeably better on the court. I have been blown away with his movement without the ball, particularly on screen and roll action. Davis is doing a tremendous job making himself available to his teammates and getting in a position to score. Without Lamb on the floor for these two scrimmages, Davis has looked like the Cats best player. His defensive positioning is much improved and he is getting to his spots a step faster than he was a season ago. He is going to have to continue to work on staying out of foul trouble but he looks to be on the brink of a breakout. Everett Duncan is making some great slash cuts and hard drives at the rim. His aggressiveness at the offensive end will be a interesting storyline to follow throughout the season. Aaron Deloney is fearless. He is going to be a player that can both shoot you into and out of a game. As with most freshman point guards his decision making is going to need refinement but he is oozing with potential. He has the ability to put a team on his back and carry them. His role this season is certainly going to be more of a spark off the bench but down the road he could take the reins and lead the team. Everything else I saw was consistent with what the players showed on Wednesday night. Robin Duncan knocked down a couple more threes showcasing his improved stroke, Daniel Giddens is going to have some crazy blocks and dunks, Stef Smith is money, and Duncan Demuth is going to do a little bit of everything. One concern for this team is how will they perform from the three point line. Losing Ernie Duncan was going to be tough anyway but in the same year that the three point line gets moved back is going to add another layer to replacing that production. Vermont has many capable three point shooters but it will be interesting to see if they can replace the consistency that Ernie brought to the court. We finally get some real basketball next week. Should be a great great game and a magical night honoring two more Vermont legends.

A quick first look at this year's team

Basketball is back!!!

At the season ticket holder event this evening fans were treated with a sneak preview of the year's team. The team played one half of basketball. No Anthony Lamb or Ben Shungu for his one but every other player played at least a few minutes. Extrapolating one half of basketball into a entire season's performance is always a fun exercise so let the overreactions begin! Biggest takeaway right off the bat is the depth of talent on this team. They are two deep at every position and are going to have impact players off the bench. Over the past few seasons they have had to cobble together their bench play and in the big games the rotation often became very small. Whoever turns out to be the second unit has a chance to be just as impactful as the starters. The battle for minutes is going to be fierce and this might be the year Becker is able to go back to the more even minutes distribution that he prefers. This group has so much length and athleticism. Becker has always had top notch defensive teams and I think this group has a chance to be one of his best. If the new players are quick studies of the system, watch out. Both transfers (Duncan Demuth, Daniel Giddens) are going to make an impact on the defensive end. Demuth is going to make some of big hustle plays and play hard nosed defense. He looks like the ultimate glue guy who is going to do a lot of little things to help the team win. Giddens has a limited offensive skillset but can absolutely jump out of the gym. He is going to have some electrifying dunks this year. His challenge will be to stay out of foul trouble and limit his turnovers. To continue on with the new guys both of the scholarship freshman looked strong. Aaron Deloney was quick and fearless. He attacked the rim and finished through contact. He is definitely going to be able to provide an offensive spark off the bench. Eric Beckett looks like a Swiss army knife player. He did a little bit of everything and is built like a truck. The other big takeaway was that Ryan Davis looked like a stud. Slimmer, quicker, and more decisive, Davis was the leading scorer in the scrimmage. He has some nice finishes inside and hit a couple from three. I really think his injury last year slowed his development and he never really got back into the groove. He looks like he could make a big jump this season. Robin Duncan also impressed by knocking down a couple triples with confidence. His offensive limitations cost him minutes down the stretch last season. He clearly committed to improving his shot in the offseason as his mechanics looked very different. He stayed much more vertical with less of the drifting that created his shooting inconsistencies last year. If he rounds out his game by making himself more of a threat on the offensive end of the floor, the sky is the limit. Everyone else looked good as well. One last observation was that Nick Fiorillo, the walk-on from Maine, might be a diamond in the rough. He is bigger than I thought and has a nice soft shooting stroke. With a year of development he looks like he has a chance to be an impact player. What a treat it is going to be to go and see big time college basketball this season at Patrick.

P.S. You might notice a change to the name of the blog. When I started this six years ago I had a website as well where I tracked milestones and important stats. That was a little beyond my computer abilities but the website was called 14th State of Mind. I am so excited for this season I felt like it was time to jazz up the blog a bit so it was time for the name change. Thanks again to everyone who reads the blog and gives me an outlet for all of my ranting and raving!

Vermont gets their first commitment for 2020

After a summer of just missing on a couple of their 2020 targets, Vermont landed their first 2020 recruit last night. Georges Lefebvre a 6'8" 205lb small forward from Montreal, Quebec who is playing at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington, North Carolina gave his verbal commitment to the Cats. You can check out his highlights here. In watching his highlights and reading up on his game, it feels like Lefebvre is a great get for Vermont. Super athletic with a 7 foot wingspan, Lefebvre has a chance to be a game changer on both ends of the court. He projects as a slashing small forward who will get out in the open court. Will dunk over anyone and is a fierce competitor. Outside game is improving and looks like he will develop into a capable outside shooter. Justin Byerly of Prep hoops wrote before last season that he was a "program changer in every way". Another high IQ, hard working player who is committed to becoming the best player they can be. His speed and athleticism really stand out and will serve him well while he rounds out the rest of his game. He might not be a day one superstar but has the potential down the road to be dominating on both ends of the floor. Early on has the potential to be a fan favorite energy player off the bench with some huge dunks and blocks.  Nice to finally be tapping the Montreal basketball pipeline as it is the closest major city. There is really no more online info about any other targets for 2020. There is only one other name on Verbal Commits and he is most assuredly going to a much high level. Vermont has shown the ability to recruit players without leaving a significant online trail to follow. It will be interesting to see who else they are targeting for 2020. We will finally get to see some real basketball in only a few weeks!

Offseason update

Hello all!

Just when I was starting to feel empty as the lull of college basketball news set in, a big time announcement snapped me back to life. Duncan Demuth the transfer from Oklahoma State who joined the Catamounts last month has been granted a wavier and will be immediately eligible. That is incredible news for a Vermont program looking to maximize Anthony Lamb's final season. At the beginning of the offseason the frontcourt depth was going to be a major issue. Fast forward a few months and they arguably have one of the best mid-major frontcourts in the country. Adding two players from major conference basketball to pair with Lamb is going to make the Cats a very interesting team this season. In games against the top programs, Becker has always felt that the lack of size and depth in the frontcourt is what has kept Vermont from getting over the hump and pulling the big upset. If any year is the year to get over that hump, this is the one. This might be the deepest collection of raw talent that the Vermont program has ever been able to put on the floor. It will be interesting to see how it all fits together when the games actually begin but it is hard not to to be incredibly excited about the potential of this season's team. On another note, after years of battling injuries Skyler Nash has decided to retire from basketball. This decision seemed inevitable after his comeback attempt last season. Nash will remain on scholarship and part of the team which is great as he is an important part of the team and is always engaged on the bench. There is going to be some incredible basketball played at Patrick this season. I can't wait for the Fall.

Vermont snags Oklahoma State transfer Duncan DeMuth

Vermont received its second commitment from a transfer in Duncan DeMuth, a 6-8 forward from Florida who played at Oklahoma State this past season. He will sit out this season and have three years of eligibility beginning in the 2020-2021 season (the coaching staff must have been concerned about the number of Duncan's on the team). That is two players from big time programs making their way to Vermont in the past week. Coach Becker has stuck to his word about continuing to push the program forward. Getting two players of this caliber would have been a coup over a 5 year period much less in the same season. The profile of the Vermont program has changed and is continuing to attract stronger and stronger talent. Vermont recruited DeMuth out of high school before his recruitment took off. He chose Oklahoma State over Iowa State, Florida State, and Princeton. Needless to say, the talent is there. DeMuth is a strong scorer at all three levels and is a playmaker off the dribble. Every article I read mentions how hard working and smart he is as on and off the court. A player who is committed to doing whatever it takes to help his team win. The type of player that excels in the Vermont system. He didn't find much success in a dysfunctional program at Oklahoma State still dealing with the fallout from the FBI investigation into player payments. I fully expect DeMuth to use the redshirt year to get himself ready to be a big contributor in a post Anthony Lamb world. This off-season has been a home run for the coaching staff thus far. They filled their need to go for it and maximize the potential of Lamb's senior season while making sure the cupboard isn't bare following the his graduation. There honestly has never been more buzz around the Vermont program and they are in position to make a splash on the national stage next season. November seems too far away.

Daniel Giddens transfers to Vermont

Vermont landed a big time graduate transfer to fill an area of need for next season. Daniel Giddens began his a career at Ohio State before transferring to Alabama. Giddens is a 6-11 center from Georgia who was a 4 star, top 65 player nationally coming out of high school. That makes him on paper the highest rated recruit to find his way to Catamount country. How does a player like that end up at Vermont? First off Giddens hasn't found consistency at the college level. He owns career averages of 3.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks in 14.4 minutes. He missed significant time last season with injuries and has struggled to live up to the lofty expectations. So what does that mean for Vermont? It means they are getting a player that could put them over the top next season. The coaching staff is clearly going all in for next season. Taking on a grad transfer can be a challenge for a team as the player has to be brought up to speed quickly and they don't have time to form the kind of close knit relationship that comes with playing together for years. In recent years graduate transfers have made significant impacts for many teams including fueling Texas Tech's final four run this past season. The Vermont program has been on the cusp for several years and with the group that is returning next season, they are ready to go for it. Giddens fills the only significant hole in next seasons rotation. After the Ra Kpedi transfer, the roster was razor thin down low. Now they add a player that will immediately bring shot blocking and rebounding. I think about how much production the coaching staff squeezed out of Samuel Dingba this season and am drooling thinking about what they could do with Giddens. Dingba was in year 3 of being a part of the Vermont program and Giddens has to get up to speed in only a few months but his ceiling is very high. His role on the team really boils down to blocking shots, grabbing rebounds, and dunking the ball when teams double Anthony Lamb. Anything else he can bring to the table is gravy. If he can stay out of foul trouble he will get big minutes next season. The coaching staff will make sure he is put in a position for success and I am guessing that is part of why he wants to come to Vermont, for a chance to succeed. If he is bought into working hard and the team first attitude that the Vermont program prides themselves on, he will make a significant impact for the Catamounts. I would guess that Vermont is not finished looking at transfers and wouldn't be surprised to see them grab a player that will have to sit out for the 2019-2020 season. Next season's team is looking like a group that will continue to push the Vermont program forward.

2018-2019 Season wrap up

Why has it taken so long to finish my wrap up of the season? I think it is because I have so much to say about the season that I am having a hard time finding the words. I have started and stopped, reflected on the season, looked ahead to next season and everything in between. What I keep coming back to is this was a season for the ages. The Catamount program has achieved so much success over the past 15 years that individual seasons and accomplishments can get lost in the sea of success. This season was special in the rarefied air of the Coppenrath/Sorrentine era. Every year the program takes another step forward. This year's group made noise with a great run through the non-conference schedule and a strong showing the the NCAA tourney. The Cats are now in a place where they believe that no matter the opponent, they expect to win. Pushing to the program to these heights has changed the expectations surrounding the program and put Vermont in a place where winning a NCAA tournament game becomes a goal. Anthony Lamb is at the center of Vermont's raised profile. Lamb had an all time great season. He improved in every aspect of his game an became a dominant force. The improvements on the defensive side of the ball were the most impressive and crucial to Vermont's success this season. He was so good this season it begs the question, Can he really make another leap next season? Lamb is a hard worker who is never satisfied and will always work to improve every aspect of his game. He is following in Trae Bell-Haynes footsteps and entering the NBA draft process in order to get feedback and further refine his game. I fully expect him to return and he will enter next season as one of the best mid-major players in the country.

Ernie Duncan leaves a legacy as maybe the best shooter to ever play at Vermont. Ernie etched his name at the top of several career shooting categories and left as big a mark as anyone on the Vermont program. He was the first person to commit to the program changing 2014 recruiting class. He got the ball rolling and really started the new era of recruiting that Vermont has entered into. Not to mention the fact that he also had several brothers who followed him to the Green Mountain State. He left his mark both on an off the court, demonstrating a unending desire to win while becoming a strong leader. He might be the most unassumingly great player in Vermont history and definitely my favorite player (so I might be a little biased). He, along with Lamb and Bell-Haynes set the expectation that as a player in the Vermont program you are never satisfied and improvements can always be made. My favorite example is that Ernie could have been satisfied with just being a great shooter a stopped at that. Instead, he kept adding dimensions to his game including becoming a lockdown defender. I think you saw the trickle down effect in a player like Drew Urquhart and are seeing a player like Ben Shungu pushing for greatness. That is what the Vermont program has become, a place where every player has an opportunity to improve and become the best player they can be. The program has seen tremendous success with using redshirt years to improve and mold players. Players like Nate Rohrer and Samuel Dingba also demonstrated that the coaching staff works just as hard to help the end of the bench improve and be ready when their number is called. The effects of that success are demonstrated in the amount of players that want to walk on an be a part of the Vermont program. This past week Vermont got another walk on commitment from Nick Fiorillo, a 6-8 forward from Maine. Players know that they will be given a chance to compete and improve.

Now the coaching staff isn't perfect and I think Ra Kpedi's transfer is an example of a tough set of circumstances. Kpedi is a player that would've benefited immensely from a redshirt year but was thrust into a role two seasons ago due to injuries. Then this season he could never quite stay on the court to get up to speed. One of the areas that continues to be a struggle for the Vermont coaching staff is getting the young big men in the program up to speed on the defensive end of the floor. The system that Vermont runs demands a lot from the big men and as a result it is harder for them to stay on the court and get the reps they need. It is something that will be interesting for next year as they will be very thin in the frontcourt and asking a lot of a young group of post players.

There is a lot to be excited about for next season as Vermont will once again be at the top of the America East and a mid-major program on the national radar. It goes without saying that Lamb is poised to dominate yet again, but Stef Smith is equally on the cusp of stardom. He found more consistency last season and at times was very clearly Vermont's second best player. He still has areas to improve upon and with increased opportunity and becoming one of the veterans next season, he is ready to raise his game to the next level. The addition of highly touted freshman Aaron Deloney from Oregon will give the Cats a dynamic scoring option off the bench. Deloney is a two time player of the year in the state of Oregon and can put up points in a hurry. Last year's bench unit struggled to find a go to scoring option and Deloney help fill that role. He plays with an intensity and edge that reminds me a little of Dre Wills. Eric Beckett also joins the team as a 6-5 do it all guard/forward who will is poised to make an immediate impact. I would expect the coaching staff to add a transfer and maybe even a grad transfer to help fill a role in the frontcourt as they still have two scholarships that they can use. Transfer commitments will be coming fast and furious over the next few weeks and I would expect to see some recruiting information trickling down. So much excitement around the Vermont program with the on court success and the new arena finally taking shape. It is a great time to be living in Catamount country.

13 Vermont vs 3 Florida State game recap

Florida State 76 Vermont 69

Vermont played Florida State tough before falling in the first round of the NCAA tournament. For most of the game Vermont executed their game plan perfectly. They made Florida State a jump shooting team and the Cats shot lights out from three. Florida State was able to turn the tides by getting to the line relentlessly down the stretch. Anytime a team is trying to pull an upset they need a few bounces to go their way and it seemed like Vermont couldn't catch a break over the last 10 minutes of the game. What was most impressive about the game was how evenly matched the two teams looked. If you took the names off the jerseys it looked like any old ACC game. Vermont looked really good and pushed Florida State to the limit. It is an interesting place to be in this program where games like this feel like a disappointment. I know the players are not satisfied and that shows the drive this team has to push even further. When you zoom out on the game it is clear that Vermont belongs and continues to perform well in these games against the big time programs. They can't quite breakthrough and are still looking for that big upset, but it feels like they are very close to reaching that goal. Anthony Lamb was really tough in this game leading the Cats with 16 points and 8 rebounds. He also led the team with 3 assists and his back to back blocks late in the first half were electrifying. Ben Shungu continued his late season surge and was incredible scoring 15 points including 3-3 shooting from deep. He looked like a stud at the end of the season and his improved shooting is a surprise to say the least. Ernie Duncan finished his career in style knocking down 5-6 from deep. Those threes bring him to 308 for his career and second place all time at Vermont. Stef Smith also chipped in 15 points as Vermont shot a blistering 16-32 (50%) from three. This group was really fun to watch this season and I will miss watching Ernie play. The future is bright and this team can be proud of how they represented the Vermont program in today's game. I will post a season wrap up sometime next week after the dust has settled. Another great season in Catamount country.

13 Vermont vs 4 Florida State: March Madness preview

The Catamounts are back in the big dance. Here are a few thoughts about their upcoming matchup.

Florida State is an imposing opponent. They are big, strong, and athletic. A defensive minded team with balanced scoring. The Seminoles have 8 players that are averaging between 6 and 13 points per game. They are led by Mifondu Kabengele, a 6-10 forward. Terrance Mann, a 6-7 guard is the Seminoles best all around player. Also on the team is a familiar face. David Nichols transferred from Albany and has spent this season as a key contributor off the bench. Vermont has the best case scenario for a lower seeded team as they get as close to a home game as possible. The game will be played in Hartford, CT if front of what will be a very pro Vermont crowd. The Cats were in a similar situation when they pulled off the Syracuse upset as a 13 seed playing in Worcester, MA. As a lower seeded team, that type of atmosphere is honestly more important than the matchups on the court. No matter what when pulling an upset, the higher seeded team has to have an off night. Just rewatch the upset of Syracuse and what will jump out at you is how poorly the Orange played in that game.  Getting a few of the outside factors in Vermont's favor is only going to help. Catamount fans travel well and I would expect the arena to be tipped very much in Vermont's favor. There is so much about an NCAA tournament game that is out of teams control such as travel time, crowd noise, game time, etc. The fact that most of those extraneous factors are seemingly tipped toward Vermont is a plus. Now for a few thoughts about the game itself.

The blueprint for a Vermont upset:

First and foremost the Cats have to stay in the game early. Many an upset bid has been swallowed up by a slow start. This doesn't mean they need to have a lead, they just have to be competing. From there it is about taking what Florida State will give them. The Seminoles are not a great three point shooting team. When looking at the competitive games that Vermont has played against big time competition over the past few years, the three point line has always been a key. Take the Purdue tournament game two years ago. Before the game one of the big concerns was the size of Purdue. Certainly the big men had an effect on the game, but the deciding factor was perimeter shooting. In the Kansas game earlier this season, it took LaGerald Vick shooting 8-8 from three to finally shake the Catamounts. Over the course of the season, Florida State has struggled to consistently make perimeter shots. If Vermont can force the Seminoles to be a perimeter oriented team, it will greatly increase their chance of pulling an upset. If they can do that on defense AND hit perimeter shots of their own, the game will be very competitive. Vermont has also been inconsistent from the three point line this season. They have a collection of shooters that can get hot and if Stef Smith can continue his late season surge Vermont will be able to win the battle at the three point line.

The free throw line is another interesting thing to keep track of for both teams. Florida State shoots 74% from the line and gets to the line at a high rate. Vermont is going to have to contend with the big men underneath and the Seminoles wing players slashing to the rim. The Cats are one of the best in the country at keeping their opponents off the line. Conversely Florida state puts their opponents on the line at a very high rate. Their physical style has put them in foul trouble at times and their opponents have been able to take advantage. Vermont shot 75% from the line this season and it will be crucial to cash in their chances when they get there.

Rebounding is key in any game and with the size that Florida State has it will be important for the Cats to get on the boards. Vermont has been exceptional at preventing offensive rebounds over the past few seasons. This season they were once again top ten in fewest offensive rebounds given up. If you go to look a the Cats T Rank you will see that they led the country in defensive rebounding percentage. This is one of the areas that has allowed Vermont to remain competitive against tough competition.

Last but not least, the Cats get to play loose as the underdog for once. They have spent the better part of the last three years as the hunted. Now they can embrace the moment and play without fear. This team is so mentally tough and even keeled. Never too high, never too low. In the games against Kansas and Louisville earlier in the season, Vermont was able to battle back each time it looked like the game was going to get away from them. I would expect the same winning mentality in this game on Thursday afternoon. I think they are going to make a game of it and it is going to be fun to watch.

AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONS!!!!

Vermont 66 UMBC 49

Today we spell redemption U-V-M.

In front of a charged up crowd the Vermont Catamounts punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament by taking down defending champ UMBC. Anthony Lamb led the charge with 28 points and 9 rebounds on his way to the Most Outstanding Player award. His leadership cannot be overstated. He keeps the team levelheaded and through his tenacity sets the example for all the other players to follow. Lamb did an excellent job against the double team and was able to take advantage of UMBC's aggressiveness on defense to get to the foul line. Stef Smith continued his strong finish to the regular season with 17 points and 8 rebounds. I have said all year that Smith's rebounding ability is vastly underrated and tonight he came up with some huge boards. His perimeter shots were not falling so he made a nice adjustment and came up with some beautiful finishes at the rim. The unsung heroes of the season also came to play in the title game. Even in my most positive and dreamlike projections this season I did not see both Ben Shungu and Samuel Dingba playing 35 and 20 minutes respectively, in the title game. Much less making crucial plays and being indispensable parts of the rotation. I give so much credit to those two players for working hard and making improvements to their game. Dingba has brought a tough physical defensive presence and given the Cats a strong offensive rebounder. He finished with 4 points and 5 rebounds in another gutsy effort. The most amazing story of the end of the season is Shungu's emergence as a go to player for Vermont. He hit some huge buckets down the stretch, including two huge three pointers. He has made himself into a serious offensive threat while continuing to play tough defense. He made life difficult for KJ Jackson and his block at the end of the first half was a huge momentum swing. Easy to root for players like that. This season might be one of the coaching staff's best as well. They worked hard to get the most out of a very young and thin bench. Becker said all week that they had a plan to take down UMBC and the Cats executed it perfectly. A 7th title, all in the last 16 years, is an incredible accomplishment. Coach Becker has continued to push the program further and is an incredibly special coach. One of the best in the business. What is most exciting is the family atmosphere and the attitudes of the players that come to the Vermont program. They all want to win and win the right way. After the game the players and coaches are all there on the court celebrating with the fans and taking pictures. This program goes beyond basketball and the fact that Becker and his coaching staff have been able to combine that with winning is an incredible feat. This three year run of success has been special and as fans we should all appreciate how rare it is to have a basketball program like this in our backyard. I think Vermont will probably get a 13 seed and can't wait to see this team in the tournament. Before the game this week I will post a preview of the matchup. Feels good to be back on top.

STEF SMITH

Vermont 84 Binghamton 51

See you Saturday.

Stef Smith exploded for 23 first half points on 7-8 shooting from three and sent the Cats to the America East championship game. Smith finished with 28 points and 8 three pointers in front of a rocking crowd. He was silky smooth and confident in a new hairdo that I would imagine makes another appearance on Saturday. Always the x-factor for Vermont, Smith is regaining the confidence he had at the beginning of the season at the perfect time. What an electric performance. Binghamton refused to come out of their zone and as a result Vermont was able to get a wide open shot on every single possession. I have never seen a game move so quickly and smoothly. Anthony Lamb was his usual self putting up 18 points on 9-12 shooting and dishing out a career high 7 assists. More than anything the team looked locked in. The Cats played every possession like it was a close game and kept up the intensity despite the wide margin. They have the fire in their eyes and are a team on a mission. The defense was particularly tight with a combination of Ben Shungu and Robin Duncan holding rookie of the year Sam Sessoms without a single point. The other semifinal was also a blowout until Hartford made a furious comeback before falling in double overtime to set up a finals rematch. This is the game Vermont wants. This team has something to prove and is poised to go out and get the championship. See you Saturday.

America East Quarterfinals 3/9/19

Vermont 73 Maine 57

Anthony Lamb set the tone early and led the Cats to victory in quarterfinal action. Lamb finished with 34 points in an impressive performance to open the America East playoffs. He looked determined from the tip and played the game like he was on a mission. He scored from everywhere showcasing his entire arsenal against an over-matched Maine squad. He looks primed for a big run. Ernie Duncan chipped in 12 points including the 300th three pointer of his career. Teams are making life difficult for Ernie lately with heavy ball denial and he is having to work very hard to get into his offense. The defense looked good in the first half and Vermont was able to give some of the young guys some good minutes in the second half. The big news from the day is that Binghamton beat Stony Brook which means that Vermont's semifinal opponent will be Binghamton due to the reseeding after each round. That is a very different semifinal that Vermont initially thought they had and it will be interesting to see UMBC and Hartford meet for a third time as Hartford beat UMBC in both meetings during the regular season. The game on Tuesday is going to be very physical and Vermont is going to have to come out and take the wind out of Binghamton's sails early in the game. I thought that Vermont really missed Ben Shungu tonight. He warmed up with a soft brace on the knee he hurt in the last game but did not play. Hopefully it is something minor. His ability to lock down defensively and get to the rim are crucial parts of Vermont's game plan. One down. Two to go.

UMass Lowell at Vermont 3/5/2019

Vermont 74 UMass Lowell 57

Vermont used a balanced attack put away Lowell in the regular season finale. Stef Smith broke out of an extended slump and led the Cats with 21 points. He looked like the Smith from the beginning of the season shooting tough threes with confidence and attacking the rim. If he can continue to knock down shots it will help alleviate some of the defense pressure on Ernie Duncan and Anthony Lamb. Anthony Lamb had strong all around game with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Opposing teams are really making life difficult for him on offense and he is working hard to find other ways to make his presence felt. Ernie tossed in 14 points on his senior night and knocked down two more three's putting him two away from 300 for his career. Samuel Dingba overcame an emotional scuffle early in the game where he received a technical foul and did what he does best puling down 8 rebounds and swatting away 2 shots. It was a strangely intense game with several technical fouls and a lot of physical play. Ben Shungu and Ryan Davis left with injuries and Davis' eye looked pretty gnarly after the game. Hopefully they are okay as both are now key pieces of the rotation. Shungu was having one of the best games of his career before the injury. He really brought the crowd to their feet with a thunderous fast break dunk early on. One thing that has gone unnoticed is that since returning from injury Davis is shooting  40% (6-15) from three. His ability to stretch the floor is starting to have a positive effect. Now it is time for the real deal. Playoff basketball. Once again it is Maine in the quarterfinal. There is nothing better that basketball in March.

Vermont clinches the regular season title

Vermont 56 Stony Brook 50

Three in a row!!

Vermont overcame another offensive meltdown and used their tough physical defense to put Stony Brook away and clinch the America East regular season title. Three straight regular season titles is an incredible accomplishment. You have to go all the way back to Drexel in the mid 90's (with current UNH coach Bill Herrion) for the last team to complete the trifecta. I realize that the tournament title is the real goal, but the sustained regular season success the Cats are in the midst of cannot be overlooked. In this game the Cats came out with more energy than they have had in weeks. They looked recharged and Isiah Moll and Ryan Davis played particularly well. They closed the first half with a 12 point lead and looked every but as if they were poised to take over the game. Then they came out of the locker room charged up even more and tried to win the game in the first 5 minutes. They took a ton of threes and too many quick shot with little success. This opened the door for Stony Brook to go on one of their patented runs. The Seawolves responded with a flurry of three pointers and stormed back to take the lead. Nothing was falling for Vermont and they fell behind by five. Then, down by three with 6 minutes to go, Ryan Davis hit the shot of the game. Davis knocked down a three from the wing to tie the game and gave Vermont the boost they needed to finish the game. Davis is really starting to come around and played this game with his best energy of the season. A few minutes later with the game tied Ben Shungu hit a tough shot in the open floor which proved to be the game winner. In crunch time other players have to step up and tonight was all about the unlikely heroes. Shungu started his second consecutive game and showed tremendous poise and toughness. Shungu finished with 7 points and a team high 8 rebounds. His transformation from walk on to key player is awesome. The offensive slowdowns continue to be concerning but the defensive intensity that the Cats are able to bring has been incredible. This is the type of game great teams have to be able to win. Against a very good Stony Brook team Vermont was able to use their defense when their shots weren't falling. This game had a playoff atmosphere with the regular season title on the line in front of a sellout crowd. The Cats checked goal number one off the list and are ready to make the push for the title.

Vermont at Binghamton 2/23/19

Vermont 69 Binghamton 63

Vermont survived a scare from Binghamton and gutted out a victory. For the second consecutive game the Cats offense looked stagnant and choppy. It is tough to win on the road and the way they were able to get stops down the stretch was a big plus. There has just been something missing the last few games. They are just not playing with the fire and energy that they had a few weeks ago. Becker is clearly seeing this as he changed up the starting lineup, inserting Everett Duncan and Ben Shungu. Robin Duncan and Stef Smith came off the bench and both saw reduced minutes. The coaching staff is clearly trying to light a fire for some of the players. This is very much shades of last season when Vermont struggled to put teams away down the stretch and we all know how that ended. The week off could not come at a better time for the Cats as they need to try and clear the slate, start over, and recapture the intensity and determination they had the rest of the season. Anthony Lamb dominated with 28 points and 12 rebounds. When Vermont needed points down the stretch he attacked the rim with purpose. For much of the game he was uncharacteristically missing shots and for the second straight game struggled with the double teams that were being thrown at him. Teams have made the adjustment defensively and are now waiting and double teaming him as soon as he gets into his move to the rim. He was able to make the adjustment late in the game and lead the Cats to victory. Ernie Duncan bounced back from and off night against UMBC and tossed in 22 points on 5-7 shooting from three. Ernie is now five threes away from becoming just the third Catamount to reach the 300 career threes plateau. That will be an incredible accomplishment. Lamb and Ernie are the guys that are going to carry this team. It will be good for the Cats to get home and they have an opportunity to take care of business and make sure they don't have to go on the road for the rest of the season.

Vermont at UMBC 2/21/19

UMBC 65 Vermont 56

Vermont was uncharacteristically sloppy and UMBC used a big second half to defeat Vermont for the third consecutive time. As I have said before since Ryan Odom took over Vermont has very often struggled with offensive flow against UMBC. Every possession is labored and it seems like a miracle every time the Cats make a shot. Tonight was no different. UMBC's pressure defense sped the Cats up and they struggled to adjust. The Vermont coaching staff has to make better adjustments to combat the scheme that UMBC is throwing at them. Time to wipe the slate clean and come up with a new strategy against this team. It is very concerning to hear on the broadcast the Anthony Lamb is dealing with another injury. He certainly struggled in this game so that will be a situation to monitor going forward. The poor three point shooting reared its ugly head again and that continues to be a point of concern for the Cats. It is almost unbelievable how different the Cats look against UMBC compared to their games against every other team. Chalk it up to a bad match-up, but on some level they are getting in the Cats heads. On the positive side of things against everyone else this team looks like a machine. It is an awfully quick turnaround for the Binghamton game on Saturday so it will be interesting to see if Lamb is healthy for that game. I think the quick turnaround is good for Vermont as it gives them an opportunity to get back on the winning track and they wont have time to dwell on this loss. Vermont still controls their own destiny as Albany beat Stony Brook  which still gives the Cats the one game lead.  Time to dig deep and focus on winning the last three games to clinch the number one seed.

Vermont at Hartford 2/16/19

Vermont 77 Hartford 75

Vermont again took an opponent's best shot and prevailed, gutting out a victory over Hartford. The game was a back and forth affair where neither team led by more than 7 points. Hartford played a nearly perfect game where they shot 53% from the field and 12-22 (55%) from three. Just about everything they threw up went in including banking in a half-court heave at the buzzer to give the game its final margin. Hartford could not have played a better game and Vermont was still able to pull out the win. Once again Anthony Lamb led the way with 25 points. I thought Hartford actually did a good defensive job for most of the game and were great taking away his go to moves. Lamb was able to adjust down the stretch and found more room to work. On the most crucial Vermont possessions of the night it was Lamb's passing that led Vermont to victory. He had two beautiful assists from the high post that led to big buckets. Is there anything he can't do? Ernie Duncan chipped in 16 points and Robin Duncan broke out of a protracted offensive slump with 7 points. Stef Smith had an up and down game but was the other Catamount in double figures with 12. Another big road win against a very tough Hartford squad. Every team is coming out and treating their games against Vermont as their championship game. The Cats have to be prepared to take every team's best shot and tonight they were able to prevail. After several strong defensive games in a row it was tough to see the Cats defense take such a significant step back. You have to give Hartford a lot of credit as they made some tough shots. The Cats were really struggling to help and recover and that is why Becker went to a small lineup down the stretch and began to switch everything. That proved to be the move that changed the momentum and propelled Vermont to victory. They are going to have to tighten up their three point defense with UMBC on deck. I am interested to see the game on Thursday against UMBC with a fully healthy Vermont squad. Should be an electric atmosphere for another game in a budding America East rivalry.

UNH at Vermont 2/13/19

Vermont 73 New Hampshire 44

Anthony Lamb hit the 20 point mark for the fourth straight game and the Vermont defense did the rest. The Cats dominated UNH to reach 20 wins for the 11th consecutive season. That is a tremendous accomplishment. That puts them in elite company with programs that are perennial final four contenders like Duke, Gonzaga, and Kentucky. To sustain that kind of success at a small school like Vermont is kind of unbelievable. It is a testament to the strong winning culture that the coaching staff and players have built. The result of the game was no surprise as UNH is the worst offensive team in the country this season. That program has fallen off a cliff with only one division one victory this season. There were no other players in double figures for Vermont as it was an opportunity for the bench to get some extended minutes. Ben Shungu continued his strong play and Ra Kpedi was finally able to get some extended minutes. Ryan Davis is starting to find his footing in the offense and is slowly but surely able to spend more time on the court. He is still a step behind on defense which of course draws Becker's ire. His play could be key down the stretch so the more repetitions he can get in game action the better. Stef Smith continues to play hard through his offensive slump. He finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds but has really been struggling from the field. Since starting the season off on fire his shooting percentage has dropped every month. In conference play he is shooting only 37-102(36%) from the field. He continues to affect the game positively in other ways but Vermont needs him to find his stroke again for the stretch run. Now the three game road trip that will really test this team. With Hartford and UMBC in the next two contests, the Cats will need to continue their tough play on the road and maintain their intensity on defense. Now is the time to put it all together.

Albany at Vermont 2/9/2019

Vermont 67 Albany 49

After getting caught in the ice mess and missing the last game, I was ecstatic to be back in Patrick.

Vermont overcame a slow start and dominated the first 10 minutes of the second half en route to a victory over Albany. Anthony Lamb was in beast mode the entire game finishing with a dominant 26 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 blocks. He was flying all over the court and really set the tone with his physical play. He had a few uncharacteristic mistakes which only motivated and focused him even more. Lamb was diving on the floor for loose balls even when the Cats had a 20 plus point lead. He is all out all the time and wants to win every play of every game. What a season he is having. Coach Becker talked about how Ernie Duncan's approach has been special and that he has really embraced his senior season in a positive way. The on court results have been incredible as Ernie had another strong game finishing with 16 points (4-7 from three) and 4 assists. He completely took over the game on both ends of the floor during the Cats second half run. He plays the game with an incredibly rare balance of joy and intensity. Everett Duncan also had a strong game and the silver lining of Lamb's two game absence was that it jump started Everett's season. Vermont's team defense was incredible throughout this game as their perimeter defense continues to disrupt opponents ability to get into their offensive sets. This afternoon the hedges on screens were phenomenal and everyone really collapsed on the ball when it went into the post. Ben Shungu did not score but was strong otherwise with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. In the first half Robin Duncan helped change the momentum with his physical play. Albany began the game with a lot of energy and they were playing physical and getting all of the hustle plays. Then Robin dug in on defense, and began hitting the boards hard. He finished with 7 rebounds and changes the game in ways that does not show up in the box score. A deflected pass here, a tap out rebound there. All of this great play while his offense has really bottomed out and he is even struggling to finish at the rim. He has actually made exactly one shot in 6 straight games where he is shooting 6-33 (18%) from the field. That feels like a kind of random statistical anomaly that will correct at some point but he truly is a player that can take over the game without scoring. Another great effort from a team that is on a mission. Can't wait for Wednesday night.

Vermont at UMass Lowell 2/2/19

Vermont 74 UMass Lowell 65

It is good to have Anthony Lamb back.

Lamb had monster game in his return to the lineup, leading Vermont to victory over a scrappy UMass Lowell team. He finished with 29 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks and scored a clutch basket late to fend off a UMass Lowell rally. This game was a perfect example of how crucial his play is for Vermont. The team at large was struggling mightily but each time they needed a bucket Lamb was there. That presence is exactly what was missing in the UMBC game. Lamb is the guy that digs deep and gets the clutch hoop. He was tremendous. The rest of the team couldn't find a rhythm and the Cats were sloppy with the ball. The continued inconsistency from three is a concern for the Cats going forward. At the beginning of the season it really felt like this team was going to be a reliable and efficient three point shooting team. They have really struggled to knock down shots. Tonight Vermont finished 3-16 and Bailey Patella and Ryan Davis each made a three which means the rest of the team was 1-14. That just shouldn't happen with the group of shooters that the Cats have. This team relies on the three point shot to prevent teams from doubling Lamb. That is an area that has to improve over the second half of the conference season. After one time through the America East Vermont is right where they want to be. Playing a team a second time is different kind of challenge so it will be interesting to see what adjustments are made by the coaches going forward. The excitement for March is building already.

Vermont at Stony Brook 1/26/19

Vermont 73 Stony Brook 52

Vermont bounced back after a tough loss and reasserted themselves as the team to beat in the America East by taking it to Stony Brook on the road. This was a huge win for the Cats without their star player Antony Lamb who was still out with a concussion. Ernie and Everett Duncan picked up the slack and led Vermont to victory. Ernie was masterful throughout the game finishing with 25 points on 7-14 shooting. He attacked the rim relentlessly and got himself to the free throw line. Everett poured in 20 points of his own to go along with 7 rebounds. That is three straight games in double figures for Everett as he has found his stroke again. Samuel Dingba was tremendous again with 7 points and 11 rebounds. The game was very physical and early on the physicality was all from the Stony Brook side. Vermont dug deep and was able to dictate the physicality for the second half of the game. The fact that the Cats did not allow themselves to be pushed around caused the Stony Brook physicality to backfire as most of the Seawolves starters were in foul trouble. The Vermont players certainly payed for it with Ernie, Everett, and Dingba all taking head shots during the game. You could see that after the UMBC game the emphasis from the coaching staff was on remembering that the defensive side of the ball is where Vermont needs to maintain their focus. This was a must win game for the Catamounts regular season title hopes and they showed up in a big way. Now they have the week off which could not come at a better time with Lamb out and this physical game taking its toll. Robin Duncan landed funny on the last play of the game so I hope that it was just a rolled ankle and he will be ready to go for next Saturday. This team proved today that they will not be pushed around with or without Lamb. A great confidence boost for the team as a whole and a great way to go into this week of practice.

P.S.
I have to give a shout out to Ryan Davis for making the first three pointer of his career. That has to feel good.

UMBC at Vermont 1/23/19

UMBC 74 Vermont 61

The Cats winning streak came to a screeching halt at the hands of UMBC. Vermont struggled to find an offensive flow without Anthony Lamb who missed the game with a concussion. Vermont didn't make their first field goal of the second half until there were under 9 minutes left. The offense was just atrocious and it was hard to watch as no one was able to step up and make the tough shots. Holding the Cats scoreless for long stretches has become UMBC's calling card since Ryan Odom took over. The defensive scheme he employs has been very effective at disrupting Vermont's offensive flow. The Cats looked like a team missing their go to player and team leader. It goes without saying but there is no one more crucial to the Vermont's success than Lamb. In years past with the balanced scoring, the Cats were able to overcome injuries as their offensive scheme was not overly dependent on one player. That is not the case this season and it is exacerbated by the fact that Lamb is Vermont's only true post player. Their frontcourt is not deep enough to make up for his absence. Now they have a few days to pick themselves up and get ready to go after Stony Brook as that game takes on a different feeling now that they are sitting at one loss. Bad games happen and the Vermont fans have been spoiled over the last two years with Vermont not laying a egg during conference play. Hopefully Lamb is back for the game against Stony Brook but if he is not someone is going to have to take charge and fire up the Cats.

Binghamton at Vermont 1/19/19

Vermont 78 Binghamton 50

A rejuvenated Samuel Dingba led a dominate Vermont team to a wire to wire victory over Binghamton. Dingba set the tone early with offensive rebounds on each of The Cats first two possessions. It was a sign on things to come as Vermont executed the most dominant rebounding effort I have ever seen. The Cats finished with a 47-16 rebounding advantage including 21-2 on the offensive glass. Dingba finished with 10 points and career high 14 rebounds for his first career double double. He was absolutely incredible in this game and it is a credit to his hardwork and persistence. Both he and the coaching staff continued to work hard and believed that he could have an impact despite his difficulties staying healthy and struggles on the court. Always great when a senior is taking advantage of his final season and playing with a sense of urgency. Vermont's defense was again dominant as teams continue to struggle to get shots at the rim. Ernie Duncan led the Cats with 20 points and Everett Duncan added 13. It was great to see Everett get some shots to fall as he has been struggling to adjust to his new role coming off the bench. Ryan Davis looked good again finishing with 6 points and 6 rebounds. Now UMBC comes to town on Wednesday night in their first meeting since the America East championship game. I would imagine the Cats will be charged up for that game. Then Saturday night is the big showdown on the road at Stony Brook. A big week with some emotional games and Vermont has to take care of business on Wednesday and avoid the "trap game" letdown. If they continue to play with the drive and intensity that they have been demonstrating they will continue to win games. Should be a fun week.

Vermont at UNH 1/16/19

Vermont 73 UNH 59

Vermont overcame hot shooting from deep by UNH to move to 4-0 in conference. The Cats dug in on defense down the stretch and Ernie Duncan made some tough shots to put the game away. Samuel Dingba came up with two huge blocks and drew a charge when the Cats needed stops. If at the beginning of the season you had told me that Dingba was going to be a difference maker on this team, I wouldn't have believed you. He has really found a place on this team and is excelling in being the defensive stopper. Anthony Lamb again led the way with 28 points and 8 rebounds. The array of shots he can hit is incredible and he showcased the entire repertoire in this one. Robin Duncan came out in the second half with fire in his eyes and made some hard nosed plays to give Vermont its edge back. He is really becoming a leader on this team. Stef Smith knocked down some crucial threes when the offense was stalling out in the second half and finished with 14 points. Ryan Davis returned from injury and looked good in his first minutes of 2019. He could be a difference maker down the stretch as he provides an offensive option to a thin frontcourt. This game was a classic case of the huge underdog treating the game like the conference finals. UNH was pumped and ready to fight. As the top team you get everyone's best shot and UNH played very well in this game. Vermont was able to do enough to pull out the victory and will be able to go back to the tape and find some things they need to clean up before their next game against Binghamton on Saturday night.

Hartford at Vermont 1/12/19

Vermont 81 Hartford 62

Vermont avenged last years defeat at the hands of Hartford in dominating fashion. This was the preseason number 1/2 match-up in the America East and it was all Catamounts. Right from the opening tip the Cats were flying all over the court and imposing their will. There was a fire in their eyes as they were relentless in gaining control of the game. The tone was set with the defense as Vermont blocked several shots early in the game including some big ones by Samuel Dingba. The transformation that Dingba has gone through over the last month has been nothing short of extraordinary. Early in the year Dingba struggled to remain on the court for more than a few minutes. Now he is starting and is making a difference at both ends of the floor. It is a testament to his hard work and determination and the coaching staff for working to find ways to give him the best chance for success. His defense and rebounding have been huge over the last few games. Anthony Lamb continues to be the best player on the floor and is putting together an all time great season. Tonight he took a beating and got up each time to dish out his own brand of strength and physicality. Lamb finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Several of the rebounds in the second half were ripped out of opposing players hands as Lamb took over the paint. Isaiah Moll finally knocked down some shots from long range finishing 3-3 from three on his way to 15 points. He has really been playing better and better in every aspect of the game except knocking down shots. It was great to see him get some confidence and find success at the offensive end. He is going to be a dangerous offensive weapon if he finds his shot. I could write an entire post about how high of a level Robin Duncan is playing at. He is the guy setting the tone defensively as he relentlessly hounds opposing point guards and runs the offense like a four year veteran. A significant part of what he does so well will never show up in a box score. He affects the game in every aspect with an incredible court awareness and an unflappable desire to win. He is the catalyst on both defense and offense. The whole game changes when he is on the court which is incredible for a freshman point guard. A great statement win that really puts Stony Book and Vermont on a collision course. This Vermont team is hungry and focused. They are a joy to watch.

Vermont at Maine 1/9/19

Vermont 73 Maine 49

Vermont used a balanced attack to take care of business against Maine. Both Anthony Lamb and Robin Duncan stuffed the stat sheet. They each finished with 11 points. Lamb had 6 rebounds while Robin grabbed 5. Robin led the way with 5 assists and Lamb had 4. Samuel Dingba provided strong defense and hustle with 3 blocks and 2 steals. Maine is not a very strong team and Vermont for the second straight night was able to bury the opposing team early. In doing so the Cats have been able to get their bench some minutes. Getting minutes for the players that struggled to find the floor early in the season is so important when facing the grind of the conference schedule. It is great to see guys like Ra Kpedi and Bailey Patella making positive plays on the court. Vermont's defense is really playing at a high level and that is going to be the key to their success. Their ability to frustrate teams and take them out of their game is important with opponents who are so familiar with your game. Now the first big test comes with the conference home opener against Hartford on Saturday night. Hartford pulled out the win at Patrick last season and was picked to finish second in the conference so this is a game that will hold a lot of emotion for both teams. I am expecting the atmosphere to be electric and it should be a good game.
