Bogues for the win!

Vermont 72 UMBC 70

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Vermont overcame a nightmare 0-15 start from the field and an early 20 point deficit to sneak out of UMBC with a win. In another show of tremendous resilience and heart, the Cats never put their heads down despite the Retrievers seemingly having every answer. In the first half it was another inexplicable offensive wasteland. Becker was just beside himself as the misses kept piling up. The Cats are getting the same open looks they have been getting all year, they just will not go down. I think that is what makes it so hard is it doesn't feel like anything is different besides shots not falling. Vermont was able to bounce back enough to cut it to an 8 point deficit at the half. In the second half there were many times where it felt like the Cats were gaining momentum. Each time UMBC had an answer with big time shotmaking. Opposing teams are really responding to the strong rim protection and tough defense from the Cats by playing mostly in isolation and relying more on jump shooting. Vermont just kept grinding and made enough plays to come out on top. Timely shooting, tough defense, and low turnovers. That is this team's bread and butter. It feels like at some point the shots are going to fall again. This was a must win game and the Cats found a way to get it done. It is very similar to how they pulled out the close victory over Brown following their tough loss at Miami (OH). This team could have called it a day and folded after the awful start but they never lost hope and showed the heart of a winner.

Shamir Bogues completely put the Cats on his back and willed them to victory at almost every stretch of the game. After having his toughest game as a Catamount on Thursday, he had his best this afternoon. Bogues finished with 23 points on 10-14 shooting and committed zero turnovers. In the first half when Vermont was down 25-5, he ignited the Cats with some electric scoring plays including a smooth step back three. In the game defining run Bogues chased down a UMBC fast break, scored inside, blocked a shot, hit a three, finished off a three point play, and hit the game winner. An incredible performance, especially considering there are still times during the game where you can see the foot injury crop up. What a gutsy performance. TJ Hurley powered through a physical game and an off shooting afternoon to finish with 11 points and 5 rebounds(4 offensive). He got several clutch rebounds today as Vermont did as great job on the offensive glass. TJ Long struggled for most of the game from the field but grabbed a career high 11 rebounds and of course hit big threes when Vermont needed them in the second half and finished with 7 points. Jace Roquemore had the lunch pail effort of the game finishing with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals while allowing Becker to play lots of different lineups with his versatility. Nick Fiorillo finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in another nice all around effort. Sam Alamutu scored 6 points and hit two huge free throws down the stretch. Ileri Ayo-Faleye pushed through what Becker described as an illness and made some big defensive plays and finished with 7 points. Matt Veretto and Aaron Deloney struggled to knock down shots in a combined 2-13 shooting performance.

You can see on the sidelines that Becker and the coaching staff are trying to solve the puzzle that is the Cats offensive struggles. Thankfully the defense continues to be strong and they were able to avoid a soul crushing two game skid. Now back home for a big showdown with pesky New Hampshire for Becker’s first shot at 300 career wins.

Also now that NJIT also beat Lowell maybe the Highlanders are just hot right now!

  1. Seems like we are starting slow in many guys, it might be time to start Nick and have Veretto come off the bench. He has struggled quite a bit this season and maybe this will allow him to play more freely. Good comeback but need to figure the slow starts out!

    1. I could see a starting lineup shuffle for sure. Becker has certainly hinted at it.

  2. SHEESH! WOW! HOTDAMN! PHEW! Going 0-15 to open the game against a team that averages over 80 pts, and so you are in the hole 25-5 having played 1/4 of the game, what do you do as a fan? Becker has his face in his hands after such a shocking opening 5 min. Well you stick around, curious if nothing else, to see what is going to happen. Enter Shamir Bogues! Played the game of his Catamount career, jump starting the zero Cat offense and was a seemingly healthy Shamir, being the 2 headed monster he is when he plays such defense! How fitting it was he scored the final 2 pts working the clock down to 5 secs. Fans owe it to themselves to watch this one on tape, and you know the outcome thankfully, because it was far from easy seeing it live. Teams cannot sleep on the Cat defense, Shamir, TJLegend and the host of rebounders they were today. Just a thought, but what would it take to get Turiq Francis from NJIT to replace Jace next year? Well, hopefully the 3s will start raining again because when they do, we are the odds on favorites. It seems that every other team has their stars, Bryant easily 2 of them, but we have a collective bunch that sees us through. Although when Shamir is right, he is our STAR!
By the way, after going 0-15 (0%), we finished 27-53 (50%) and we made those “must” FTs!!!

    1. Pretty sure Jace can return next year.

    2. Bogues was so good. Francis would struggle on a team where he doesnt get such an insane percentage of shots. Takes a lot of sacrifice to play to Vermont. If he left he would most certainly go higher level. Jace is back and I love what he brings to the Cats. Alamutu's free throws were so clutch!

  3. The win was a gutsy victory for the Catamounts and plays big as the season grinds down. However, it is frustrating to watch the team/coaches not change strategy when the 3 ball went cold. They made the runs by penetrating the paint and working hard on the boards. That was the formula that was working. When they kept throwing the 3 they gave the momentum back to UMBC.

    1. The threes are what they want on offense. THey are good shots within the flow. They don't want to tell the guys to stop shooting because then they would become very one dimensional and dont have the individual shot getters to break the defense down one on one. In the end the big momentum swings were big threes from Long and Bogues.

  4. This team can't be shooting the 3 that poorly. I suspect they are too dependent on the 3 and when the 1st few don't fall it is a lot of pressure on the next guy that takes one . It seems that this dependency might take the 3 shooter out of the natural flow of the game . When they finally start to drive and shoot in the paint things get better. It seems that several of the other teams have some unbelievably talented athletes like Francis and Brown. Never understood why it wasn't easier for UVM to recruit talent like this consistently with their record and NCAA appearances. Here's hoping we can land somebody like that next year.

    1. The misses are definitely contagious right now. I think their offense is balanced enough as the shots are in the flow of the offense. Vermont has very much gotten talent like that. Seven consecutive players of the year. Bogues is certainly as good of an athlete and showed it in this game. Those guys also look alot better when they are given the unlimited green light and are playing with house money on a bad team. Put those guys on Vermont and they would be in a much smaller role as they would have to be bought into sacrificing individual stats for winning. Winning at the level that Vermont does requires a different mentality.

    2. Bogues is as good as any athlete in the league. Ditto IAF. WHEN did his injury crop up? I missed that. I hope he's healthy.

  5. Good points Lee. We certainly have controlled the POY the last 7 yrs and 3 of them went back to back. And your point about Turiq and the other “stars” in the conference is well taken considering UVM’s style of play and its emphasis on defense first. And I wouldn’t want to go back to the one or even two star centric, because when they are off, you tend to be screwed. I like what got us to this point and it is defense and unselfish team play. Yesterday was certainly an anomaly. If you have a healthy Shamir, all seems to be well. However, Cats have to game plan for Turiq as we may face NJIT in the 1st round of the playoffs and when we beat them, Turiq wasn’t playing. They are playing with a lot of house money and are an extremely confident bunch.

  6. Cats prevailed in a real exiting game to watch. The pace was amazing as UMBC set the tone from the beginning. They were very fired up and Brown is an amazing player and appears to be a team player. A classy guy too.
It would be nice to have him play for the Cats . Bogues is the engine that drives the Cats - so fortunate to have him ! He is amazing on both offense and defense

  7. Cats were down 25-5 with approximately 10 min gone, so UMBC was on pace for 100 pts (not inconceivable the way the Retrievers were playing), but Cats defense got it together to hold them to 70 pts. Good job guys!

  8. We had Eddie Benton and struggled to win… big stars are not the team

  9. We had Anthony Lamb! Absolutely star power and a team player/leader

  10. Watched all four AE hoops games yesterday. Games are really tightening up top to bottom with only a few points separating winners and losers. Everyone is hungry which will make the end of the season and playoffs fun and interesting for sure. No team though plays as unselfishly as Vt and with their lock down D! My money is on the perennial favorite though barring any multiplayer injuries. Go Cats

  11. Assuming everyone comes back that is eligible too we will have another AE tire contention team next year. Especially if we see growth in their games!

  12. Too early for that kind of speculation. I’m having to break out the lucky hat and sweatshirt already… need to hold on tight and keep cheering this stable of Cats first!

  13. A scary game, until the end. It was so great to see Bogues back to Bogues on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense this game. His blow by action is something we haven't seen from a Cat in a long while- maybe never. As usual, " Second Half Hurley" did his thing when needed: a patient kid and mature beyond his years.Good coaching job from Becker; realizing that even open threes weren't dropping, so it was time to go inside. And as usual the Cat D wasn't strong.

  14. Hey Lee,

Are the Cats going after Beagle again? Does anyone have any info on this?

  15. Too easy to say to say the shots aren't falling. Defenses are playing Varetto Long Hurley and Deloney for the 3. So the shots are harder to make. The defense and Bogues can carry the team only so far.

    1. However, the statistics do say the shots aren’t falling… just saying.
