AD appreciation post

Vermont 62 Binghamton 49

Vermont won a gritty, physical, ugly battle against Binghamton to move to 8-0 in conference play. The first half was played in a kind of slow motion with both squads struggling to find their offense and 12 total fouls called with only one total free throw taken. In the second half Binghamton threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Cats with big lineups, small lineups, and everything in between as they tried to find some way to break through the steely Vermont defense. The shotmaking showed up down the stretch and Vermont secured the victory. Once again the defense was the main event, absolutely smothering by making every possession long and every shot difficult. The Cats ended with only 5 turnovers and orchestrated the game with a calm power. The formula is there for the Cats: smothering defense, low turnovers, and timely shotmaking. The balance and depth of this team wears teams out and the unselfishness can render the opposing teams scout null and void as anyone and everyone is really to take the reins and lead the team at any given moment.

Aaron Deloney is flat out an incredible player. His career arc should be the blueprint for any young player who has their eye on a successful college career. Through his first two seasons he was averaging 2.6 points in 11 minutes per game and shooting 23% from three. AD never hung his head, waited his turn, put in the work, and made an impact from the bench when it was his time. He then put in even more work and earned his chance to get out there and lead the team as a starter. When adversity hit he was honest with himself, his coaches and teammates were supportive of him, and he knew that he could be everything he wanted to be in his role off the bench. Now his team is in first place and he is only 25 points away from 1,000. A tenacious competitor, tremendous leader, and an absolute baller. Six straight games in double figures. In conference play, 34 assists and only 6 turnovers. In today's game he was masterful, finishing with 16 points on 4-8 shooting from three and 5 assists. Becker said at the beginning of the year this was AD's team and it is safe to say he was right. TJ Long was the other Catamount in double figures with 14 points. He continues to attack the hard closeouts with physical drives to the rim. Matt Veretto got the Cats off to a hot start and finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds. Nick Fiorillo has just been exploding off the bench and impacting the game all over the place. Big rebounds, gorgeous passes, and clutch buckets. He finished with 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and showcased some nimble footwork around the rim with some crafty finishes. Jace Roquemore has become the swiss army knife off the bench, moving around on both sides of the ball and showcasing his versatility. Roquemore finished with 7 points this afternoon. Ileri Ayo-Faleye and Shamir Bogues struggled offensively, combining for just 4 points but once again were smothering on the defensive end. They both use their wingspans and quickness so well and can seemingly simultaneously threaten a double team and cover their own man.

Halfway through conference play and Vermont is ready to continue the march with a road swing down the coast next week.

  1. And Bryant and Lowell go down, good day for the Cats

  2. Agreed! AD has been so good in his role and what impresses me the most is the assists. To have him and Nick F come off the bench is amazing. Another America East 6th of the year coming up?! His only competition might be from his teammate. And yes, Bryant and Lowell losing put a two game cushion in the there for the Cats (need home court throughout). Bryant and Lowell have yet to play each other I don’t think, a couple more losses added to them. I really wished Hurley could have put that dunk down today. He attacked the hoop, aggressiveness I hadn’t seen in him. That would have been a poster and confidence building for him. Go Cats!

    1. There is some competition for 6th man this year as one of Lowell best players comes off the bench as well. Bryant and Lowell don't play each other until feb 17th and they again shortly there after. Weird quirk. Love Hurley going for it.

  3. Regular season is there for UVM play smart and get home court through the AE playoffs . But still have to win to get the bid

  4. Gritty way to grind out the win. It was almost as if it was an off day for the top America East teams; the difference of course was Vermont won the tough game, Bryant and UML lost! That’s how one marks a great team. AD is a Catamount treasure

    1. The ability of Vermont year in a year out to take the grind head one is impressive. AD is so great.

  5. With two key losses to the two teams behind us, I believe we have what it takes to take the league again. This team is so disciplined. I don’t see it from other teams in the league thus far. Although, Binghamton did play a gritty game today. We can probably expect that the rest of the way as teams jockey for higher positions.

    1. Vermont is far and away the most disciplined team. As long as they take the season one game at a time they should be able to jeep that key mental focus.

  6. I wonder if the Thursday-Saturday format is the reason for the seemingly disjointed play in the second game?

    1. I think that is a big part of it. Especially in conference when the teams are so familiar and the battles more important.

  7. If we are going to be competitive in the NCAA tourney, it’s the same format!

    1. It absolutely is but the lack of familiarity of opponents makes the games more unpredictable. Every conference game each team knows what they are gonna get and have a very detailed game plan.

    2. Nick’s dad said Nick loves the guys he’s playing with and Nick will be coming back next year. Glad to have him back!

  8. Lee - was wondering does Nick have another year of eligibility left? And if so, is there a sense he will be back for another year? Outside any potential portal defections, are the only ones graduating AD, Mills and Verdetto? Meaning there is a path to bringing back 7 of our top 9?

    1. I was thinking/wondering the same thing? Jace is listed as a grad student? Losing those two guys’ leadership will hurt but replaceable and maybe Joba can fill Veretto’s place which would really leave the door open for a real impact player. Meaning might be able to sell to a Sr/grad student the idea that this team with one stud transfer can make a special team! Looking forward to the rest of the season and still fear UML. Will be at u Albany game with my kids!

    2. The only current players who are out of eligibility are Veretto, Deloney, and Mills. Fiorillo and Rocquemore both have their COVID year if they so choose. My current sense is they will return. There is a path to have very little turnover. However, the NCAA was challenged on the transfer rules so once again second time transfering is on the table again with no sit out year so you never know. Lowell is probably the most complete team outside of Vermont. Have fun!

  9. being able to go 9 and 10 deep is such an advantage / we are able to wear them out in the 2nd half /

    1. There are no teams that can match the Vermont depth.

  10. I never really understood all of the Fiorillo negativity. He is a well rounded, unselfish, veteran player, who is bought into winning. The pieces have been there for awhile but the injuries had gotten in the way.

  11. Excellent write up Lee. Vermont just may finish undefeated this year, with the remaining schedule.

    1. Thank you! The schedule is always a grind, especially with the Thursday/Saturday turnaround this year.

  12. Lee, What do you think about the Beagle situation with Albany and do you think there's any chance he would consider UVM as they recruited him out of HS. Here's hoping!

    1. Hard to say. A lot of the numbers he has put up are a bit empty since Albany has been so bad and he struggles on the defensive end so I am not sure about fit. He would need to buy in and commit to a much smaller role than he had at Albany. Also it looked to me like he kind of quit in the game in Patrick after a few poor plays. I don't pretend to know what is going on and if he is struggling with his mental health I hope he gets the help he needs. He also entered the portal in the offseason so maybe Albany is not a good fit for him.
