Vermont nabs their first 2027 commitment

High school recruiting? In the fall?

Getting flashbacks from a previous era, Vermont got their first commitment for the 2027 recruiting class from Davon Maloney, a 6'6 wing from Troy, NY who plays for the Newman School in Boston. It is crazy to think but it really does feel like a thing of the past to get early commitments in the fall as part of the recruiting process. The upcoming 5 in 5 eligibility switch should shift recruiting into another new era and will likely shift some emphasis back on high school recruiting. Maloney is an athletic wing who is a strong rebounder and defender with an expanding offensive game. He has become a reliable three point shooter with fluid mechanics and likes to finish above the rim in traffic. Maloney is a straight line attacker who gets in the trenches and impacts the game on the offensive glass. He has all the hallmarks of a player who thrives in the Vermont system. A player who has a great motor and solid defensive foundation who can step out and be a threat from the perimeter. He was at the game this past weekend and it is always a feather in the cap for the program when they can secure a commitment after a visit. He is the type of player that often gets better in the Vermont system and I think has strong potential as a versatile, do it all, 3 and D type player. He has the size to guard multiple positions and the motor to impact the game without the ball in his hands. Projecting impact is still so hard in these days of roster fluctuation, but much like this past recruiting cycle, the skill and system fit for Maloney is good.
