Vermont completes their 24-25 roster

Today Vermont filled their last scholarship for the 24-25 season with a commitment from Gavin Perryman, a 6'1" transfer guard from Dallas, TX who has spent the last three seasons at Texas. With the late decommitment from Jayhlon Young it is good to get some veteran experience to fill the spot. Whereas wth Young the coaching staff was most certainly excited about his defensive value, Perryman is a pivot to give the Cats some insurance in the shooting department. Perryman redshirted in the 21-22 season and did not see very much game action over the last few seasons. Vermont will give him an opportunity to prove himself at the Division I level. In high school at Jesuit Dallas Prep, Perryman was an absolute sniper from long distance, shooting 42% over three varsity seasons on a very high volume (228-582) from three (Jesuit Prep actually has high school stats on their website. You can even check out his baseball stats as well!). Going to Texas was a legacy move as his father, Brandy Perryman, was a star shooting guard for the Longhorns in the mid nineties (1994-1998). After graduating in three years from Texas, Perryman has a chance to make an impact with what I would assume is two more years of eligibility. I actually got a chance to see Perryman play during his visit on the first day I went down to camp last week (before he tweaked something and sat out). He is comfortable with the ball in his hands and has a nice stroke from the outside. He is physical, smart, and looked like a good fit. I see him as having a range of outcomes this season and filling the Brenton Mills role. Perryman will bring a veteran presence and push the competition in practice while being able to fill in if needed due to injury or ineffectiveness. A nice job by the Vermont coaching staff filling the last scholarship for this season in a less than ideal situation. This will help take some of the pressure off any of the young players who may have been forced into a role if there were any injury difficulties similar to last season. With the roster fully set fans can now get excited to this season's group of Catamounts in the fall. Can't wait!

  1. Thanks for this report. Sadly, Brenton Mills did not have a role this past season, which is a shame. I was really rooting for him. How did this Perryman recruitment happen?

    1. Honestly Mills role is about what I expected. He struggled defensively at his other stops and couldn't quite get there on that side of the ball. He did a great job as a fill in during injuries and by all accounts filled the veteran presence/locker room role that is equally as important as the on court stuff. I am sure that it was difficult at times but there are players that want that role with an opportunity for more on a winning team. Offering that winning atmosphere is a huge advantage for Vermont. As far as the Perryman recruitment, I am guessing that the coaching staff dug back into the portal and called around looking for a guy who was willing to come to a winning program without a guarantee of minutes. Got him on campus and secured the commitment.

  2. And please find out why young left so quickly? Something with the team? Coaches? Facilties? School? That was a quick in and out.

    1. Maryland was a part of his original recruitment in the portal. He was all in coming to Vermont but after the portal closes Power 5 schools often call around and try to lure mid major guys to fill out their roster. I am sure that Maryland came back around with a hefty NIL offer.

  3. I have no info regarding Young's quick departure, but our being something like his fourth team was a flag for me. Seemed like he had a hard time settling into programs, may have had some academic issues, etc. He looked great on paper, but I remain very enthusiastic about this year's team.

    1. All of the reports from his other stops were positive and the coaching staff was very high on his fit within the program. Power 5 schools with unlimited budgets have been notorious for calling around in the early summer looking to fill out their roster by poaching guys from mid major teams. Young had considered Maryland originally but was swayed to Vermont. The Terps came back around after the portal closed and I would assume increased their NIL offer. A reality of the current state of things.

  4. Lee,

I watched your YouTube post of the Syracuse game. Thank you! Do you know where I can get a copy of ESPN's The Season, the Vermont episodes? It's important. Thank you in advance.
