Jayhlon Young decommits from Vermont

Yesterday Memphis transfer Jayhlon Young decided to reopen his recruitment and decommit from Vermont due to personal matters. It is an unfortunate blow to the guard depth at Vermont with only a short time before the players are back on campus for the summer session. Young's defensive prowess was such a good fit for the Cats and I was looking forward to some Bogues/Ileri/Young defensive lineups. I wish Young well and hope that he finds the right fit to complete his basketball career. On the positive side, this is the area of the roster that has the most depth and there are many candidates to push for the vacated minutes. It was unlikely that Vermont was going to escape the portal era unscathed and this is the first time where the rapidly changing landscape has hit the Cats in a negative way. Now it will be interesting to see if/how Vermont decides to fill the open scholarship. With good depth the Cats might be able to be patient and see what is available or they could make a mad dash to fill the spot. I am looking forward to getting a look at the team in a few weeks during the Becker camp week.

  1. Unfortunatel, , but these things happen . On the hopeful side and this is from memory, I believe , UVM signed Marquis Blakey very late . ( maybe even in July before his freshman year ) And he turned out to be very special. We can only hope and backcourt is an area of depth I would be much more concerned if Odom decommitted. Let’s hope every one comes back healthy and 24/25 is a special year for UVM basketball

  2. What went down? Did he ever make it to campus? What a waste of time and energy. Thanks for the report.

    1. No idea. Pure speculation is that often high majors spend some time poaching players from mid majors in early summer to finish out roster.

    1. He would have been a significant part of the rotation and I think would have been a solid contributor. That said, the team has plenty of options.

  5. Is it possible Jackson Skipper comes back? Maybe a role for him?

    1. Very unlikely. Closer to home at Oral Roberts.

  6. Light on guards. Bogues, TJ Hurley, TJ Long and Jace. That’s really 4 guys for 3 spots unless we play big more. Maybe Sammy and Odom get minutes at a wing spot.
