Robin Duncan makes the leap

I am back in town and just wanted to say a few words about the game over the weekend and Robin Duncan.

Another strong performance from the Cats against UMBC. What was particularly encouraging was the way that Vermont responded to the second half charge from UMBC. Several players made clutch plays on both the offensive and defensive end. That is the type of execution that wins games in March. The big sequence for me was the multiple missed free throw offensive rebounds at the end of the game. Obviously making the free throws would have been nice but the fact that the Cats were able to get those extra possessions demonstrates the mentality, drive, and confidence that this team is playing with. The other contending teams are continuing to falter on the road and that is presenting Vermont with a golden opportunity from this point on. They have a week off to get ready and then Albany and Maine on the road. Those two road games become a crucial part of the season as they have a home heavy schedule after that.

What more can you say about Robin Duncan? I have always loved the way Robin plays and have appreciated the way he has been able to affect the game “outside the box score” throughout his career. Did I ever think he would be able to dominate a game on the offensive end to the point where the opposing defense had to start bringing a double team? Not in my wildest and most optimistic dreams. That is a testament to not only how far he has elevated his game, but how much he has mentally locked in. Through that process this year he has been able to inspire the same mentality across the entire team and that leadership is what has helped shape and mold this team into a contender. Brian Voelkel was always one of my favorite players to watch for the same reason. I love those guys that are playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers and make themselves a central part of a team in a non traditional way. Robin has worked his way into the player of the year conversation through the sheer power of will. He has made himself into a player that you have to scheme to stop and as a result his teammates have more space and opportunities to impact the game in their own way. That is the mark of a true team leader. Watching this team feed off his tenacity for the rest of the season will be incredible.

  1. And as far as Robin’s emergence, it wasn’t necessary for him to be the player he is, prior to today, given the strong cast of POY, DPOY, and various other 1st team conference players posting up or shooting from beyond the arc that he played with year in and year out. He had to evolve and emerge big time this year and so far he has done it! What a leader! He doesn’t have to take a back seat to his older brothers (who we loved) and just maybe, he has been the Most Valuable Duncan when you look at his whole body of work.

    1. He has been thrust into a larger role this season and it speaks to his drive to do whatever it takes to help the team win.

  2. Well said. Have really enjoyed how he has evolved on the O side. Still wish he could develop a better free throw shot down the stretch. He carries the ball a lot late in the game when opponents need to start fouling to catch up. But, cant have it all I guess!

    1. Agreed! I think the free throw shooting is what it is a this point. But after this way this season has gone so far, I wouldn't put it past him to grind it out at the line down the stretch.

  3. I think Robin may be one of the best rebounding guards in the country- he is so smart and strong-if he gets his hands on the ball-it is his. Duncan's development is also a testament to the coaching staffs development and retention of players. I look at Becker's program and I see something very similar to Nova under Jay Wright.

    1. His rebounding is incredible. A combination or physicality, intelligence, and sheer will. The player development in the Vermont system is elite. If they get buy in, they can get the best out of a player.

  5. Hi Lee, wondering about Veretto and Deloney for next year. Are they eligible?

    1. They both have another year. I assume Veretto will use the extra year but have not heard which way Deloney is leaning.

    1. With the way the portal has affected recruiting it is very hard to predict at this point.
